Weekly Notes – 10/16-10/29

Halloween is nearly upon us. We’ve been doing sleep therapy with the kid, which made me realize just how much I was using him as an alarm clock. I will need a better way of getting up in the mornings now.

Been making some fall cocktails, which have turned out really good. The above is a slight variation on this: https://robbreport.com/food-drink/spirits/best-prime-inspector-recipe-apple-brandy-cocktail-1237255575/

The only real changes I made were I used sweet vermouth instead of Punt E Mes because that’s what I had.

I also made https://www.halfbakedharvest.com/the-half-blood-prince-cocktail/ and it was good, but not as good as the Prime Inspector.

I’ve also been forcing myself to use my split keyboard more. It’s a tough learning curve because I have some bad habits and can only use it at home. Getting better though. This post was done 100% with it!

What I’ve been reading

I finished up https://www.benaaronovitch.com/product/moon-over-soho-chronology/ which was pretty good. Started the next book in the series.

I also got halfway through The Empire of Silence before having to return it to the library. I’ll need to finish it as it was a good start.

https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/2025/10/headphones-listening-music/684712

This was good, as I’d not considered the impact of headphones on the experience of listening to music.

https://jacobin.com/2025/10/enshittification-doctorow-musk-twitter-internet

Interesting because as the article points out people still use twitter. One would expect the market to punish services that people no longer enjoy using.

Probably the kick I need to finally get off goodreads ans switch to something else.

https://www.geoffreylitt.com/2025/10/24/code-like-a-surgeon

A good piece on how to approach software as AI picks up.

Legit excitement over this.

Amazing that a company can knock out half the internet and the stock still goes up.

Neat little collection of scripts.

Cool look at how they got this done.

What I’ve been watching

Finished up Long Story Short and it was really good.

Enjoyed this a lot. Jensen Ackles did a great job. I’d be 100% okay with him playing Batman in a live action film.

I really wanted this to be better than it was.

It was good, and hit that LOTR itch a little bit.

An interesting approach.

Interesting as usual.

I prefer tactile but those Sakuras sound amazing.

I end up watching this about once a month. Be curious.

I always learn something. Great as usual.

A shame as I really wanted it to be good.

Another good video where I learned something.

Cool video but I’m not sure what the benefit would be over a dataclass. Need to ponder more.

Another good critical look at the industry.

Self help has always been scammy feeling to me.

I’m not sure this one fully clicked with me yet. Might need to watch it again.

Haha. Everything is fine.

Okay maybe not.

Another one I come back to about once a month.

I need to play through this again now that they’ve hit 1.0.

This was fun today.

What I’ve been listening to

Don’t know why the album art didn’t show, but the empty space is the KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack. I wish I could say that it was all for the kiddo but alas.

I didn’t even remember buying a Godsmack album, so I gave it a go and the fist song (Voodoo) I hadn’t heard in a long time and it took me back. Crack the Skye is also phenomenal, and I had the luck to see them perform this live which has stuck with me ever since.
